Almond Milk

Updated: Apr 6, 2022

Getting a store-bought almond milk bottle is definitely easy and convenient. However, making your own can be really fun too! On top of that, it's healthier since you can have full control over the ingredients

So why it is better to make your own milk ?

The other day when I picked up a bottle of almond milk at the supermarket and started to look at the ingredient label, I am surprised to see the actual percentage of almond, ( only 5%! ), the rest are some of these following ingredients -

  • Tricalcium phosphate

  • Sunflower lecithin

  • Gellan gum

  • Potassium citrate

  • Vitamin A palmitate ( known as synthetic vitamin that has been proven to accelerate cancer growth, as well as cause allergic reactions, hair loss, liver toxicity, and eye and mouth problems)

  • Cane sugar

  • Carrageenan ( known as thickener and beverage stabilizer)

Making almond milk should only contain 2 ingredients - almond and water.

However, in order to produce in large quantities ( it does take quite a lot of almonds to product almond milk), the core ingredient will be then cut down to minimal cost.

So, why not trying to make your own almond milk ? And the best part is, it only takes 10 min! All you need it's almonds, water and a high speed blender! Also, filtering out the pulps can get messy sometimes so I would strongly suggest using a proper nut milk bag.

Ingredients

1 cup of almonds

a pinch of salt

5 cups of filtered water

2 whole dates, pitted (optional, you can adjust the quantity based on the preferred sweetness level)

2 tbsp of cacao powder (optional, for chocolate flavoured milk)

Instructions

Soak the almonds in cool water and leave it overnight.

Drain off the water the next day and put in the blender the almonds, salt, dates and cacao powder (optional).

Blend with high speed for at least 1-2 minutes.

Filter out the pulps using a milk bag or a paper filter bag. Squeeze until all the liquid is extracted. There you have it, the homemade almond milk!

Discard the pulp or check out this site for different way of utilising it.

Transfer the liquid to a covered glass bottle and refrigerate. Consume the milk within 3-5 days. Remember to shake well before drinking too!

Enjoy!
